WikiLeaks: How "Merkozy" was pressing Berlusconi to follow the hellish Greek path

Fresh revelations by WikiLeaks include, among other things, intercepted by NSA communication of Berlusconi's personal advisor on international relations, Valentino Valentini, which describes concerns on the Italian financial crisis expressed by French President Sarkozy and German Chancellor Merkel to the Italian Prime Minister, and show that they pressured Berlusconi to take action. globinfo freexchange A 22 October [2011] meeting attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and Italian Prime Minister (PM) Silvio Berlusconi was later described by the Italian's personal adviser on international relations, Valentino Valentini, as tense and very harsh toward the Rome government. Merkel and Sarkozy, evidently brooking no excuses with respect to Italy's current predicament, pressured the PM to announce strong, concrete palliatives and then to implement them in order to show that his government is serious about its debt proble

Regime change in Ankara? More likely than you think

by Mike Whitney On Friday, the United States rejected a draft resolution by Russia that was intended to prevent a Turkish invasion of Syria. Moscow had called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to address its growing concern that Turkey is planning to send thousands of ground troops and armored vehicles it has massed on its southern border, into Syria to protect Turkish-backed militants and to block the Kurdish militia, the YPG, from establishing a contiguous state in northern Syria. Moscow’s one-page resolution was a thoroughly-straightforward document aimed at preventing a massive escalation in a conflict that has already claimed the lives of 250,000 and left the country in ruins. According to Russia’s deputy U.N. envoy, Vladimir Safronkov, “ The main elements of this Russian draft resolution are to demand that all parties refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of Syria, that they fully respect Syria’s sovereign

Australian housing market: “Insane.”

“ Not a question of if but when there will be a mortgage crisis.” Real estate is local – until it isn’t. Cities have their own housing bubbles that implode on their own time. But once contagion spreads to mortgages and banks and infects confidence of real estate investors and homebuyers alike, and once debt levels are so high that they have become unsustainable and can’t be pushed higher, then a real estate bubble suddenly becomes a national economic issue with terrible consequences. In Australia, which has the highest household debt in the world, “ homes are so expensive that nearly half of all mortgages are interest-only. ” They’re offered by the biggest banks with loosey-goosey lending standards. And “ that is a red flag for imminent disaster. ” “ It’s not a question of if but when there will be a mortgage crisis in Australia, ” explained Jonathan Tepper, CEO at research firm Variant Perception, on the local 60-Minutes segment, Home Groans, that aired
