Juncker in total denial: unable to see the fast-sinking European 'Titanic'

globinfo freexchange The president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, presented a proposal containing five scenarios on which path Europe should take after Brexit. It is not surprising that the scenarios offer zero real solutions. We shouldn't expect anything more from a lobby-occupied neoliberal bureaucrat who has no vision. What's most surprising however, is that the first scenario suggests simply to let Europe go on under current status! In other words, according to this scenario, nothing needs to change! From Telegraph : The European Union could give up on its dreams of political union and become “nothing but the single market” under a radical proposal put forward yesterday by Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission. The proposal was one of five scenarios laid out by Mr Juncker in a white paper designed to kick-start a debate on the future of the EU after Britain quits the Union in 2019. [...]

Election of Tom Perez to DNC chair shows the DNC establishment has learned nothing

Failing to learn from the humiliating losses of the last election, establishment Democrats continue to cater to their oligarchical donors while rejecting the party’s progressive base and its future. By Whitney Webb Part 1 The past year has not been kind to the Democratic Party. Engulfed in major scandals in the lead-up to the election, Democrats suffered humiliating losses in November, losing the majorities they held in the House and Senate along with the presidency and several key governorships. In addition, major rifts within the party became impossible to ignore. Many Democrats, energized and motivated by the insurgent primary campaign of Bernie Sanders, felt betrayed and ignored by the party establishment that did everything in its power to ensure the nomination of one of the most unelectable candidates of all time, Hillary Clinton. Months after the bitter primary concluded, the Democratic Party remains anything but united, as it is desperately trying t

Demystifying Alexander Nahum Sack and the doctrine of odious debt

Eric Tousaint’s study of the odious debt doctrine by Eric Toussaint Part 2 - Whether a regime was despotic or democratic was of little concern to Sack As far as the jurist was concerned, when there is a change of regime caused by annexation, division or revolution, the new regime must honour debts accumulated by the previous regime. There would, then, be continuity on State obligations towards creditors even after a radical regime change. This was the conservative and reactionary position that held sway over international relations at the time. Moreover, the democratic or despotic nature of the former regime or the new one did not influence this general rule. In Sack’s view, what counted was the existence of a regular government exercising power within the State’s territory: “ By a regular government is to be understood the supreme power that effectively exists within the limits of a given territory. Whether that government be monarchical
